Here’s a news flash for you: given the unavoidable and inevitable forces of gravity and aging, all of us sooner or later have sore feet.  Laura Kauffman, who has been diagnosing and taking care of them for more than twenty years as a nurse practitioner at Turner Geriatric Clinic, will help us to understand how we can treat many common foot problems at home – and when we should seek the advice and assistance of health care professionals.

In 1940, FDR called for industrial mobilization to build 50,000 airplanes per year. The Michigan auto industry answered the call and the Willow Run Bomber Plant produced thousands of planes for World War II. That history has been commemorated at the Yankee Air Museum, whose own history before, during and after the devastating fire a few years ago – and its current plans for a campus style museum devoted to the Willow Run Story – also will be covered in this talk.

Eight years ago Accuri Cytometers was spun off from the University of Michigan. Four rounds of venture funding later it employs more than eighty people worldwide, its products are used on all seven continents, and new leadership is in place for further dramatic expansion. It has made flow cytometry – complex analysis of cells suspended in fluid and passed through an optical or electronic detection device – available to life science researchers in a microwave-size bench-top package at a fraction of the cost of competitive devices: a remarkable example of developing and successfully commercializing U-M research breakthroughs.

Following up a popular presentation two years ago, Bob will give us a progress report in his final year of a three-year appointment to the federal Taxpayer Advocacy Panel, describing the projects and initiatives he has worked on with the IRS and the unique perspective on our federal and state tax systems he has gained from these experiences.
